A new chapter of board leadership is underway at High Jump.

As Board Chair, Mary Fifield brings a deep commitment to the belief that education can open doors, expand opportunity, and help young people shape their own futures. In this conversation, Mary reflects on what inspired her to take on this role, the perspective she hopes to bring, and why this moment holds so much promise for High Jump’s students and families.

From the role High Jump can play in creating pathways to upward economic mobility to hopes for what students will achieve in the years ahead, Mary shares a vision centered on what becomes possible when young people have access to opportunity—and a community of people invested in their potential.

What inspired you to join High Jump’s Board of Directors and step into the role of Board Chair?

“I joined High Jump’s Board in 2019 after learning about the organization from fellow parents at the Latin School of Chicago. I’ve always loved learning, and I believe that access to a great education has the power to change the course of a child’s life. Joining the board felt like a natural way to put those beliefs into action. When I was asked to serve as Board Chair, I was honored to say yes. I care deeply about the work High Jump is doing, and I’m grateful to be in a position where I can give back in a meaningful way.”

What perspective, experience, or leadership philosophy do you hope to bring as Board Chair?

“As an executive coach and leadership consultant, I spend my days helping leaders grow, build strong teams and navigate change. It’s reinforced my belief that the best leaders listen first. As Board Chair, I hope to bring that same mindset by asking thoughtful questions, building strong partnerships and keeping our focus on High Jump’s mission and the students and families we serve.”

High Jump believes education is a pathway to upward economic mobility. What role do you see the organization playing in helping students build brighter futures?

“High Jump recognizes students with the academic ambition and potential to succeed and helps them realize it. Through academic enrichment, long-term support and access to outstanding educational opportunities, High Jump helps create a pathway to upward economic mobility that can benefit families for generations.”

When you think about High Jump five years from now, what do you hope will be different for the students and families we serve?

“I hope High Jump is reaching more students across Chicago while staying true to what makes the organization so special. Growth matters, but so does preserving the high-quality programming, relationships and long-term support that have defined High Jump for nearly 40 years.”

Why is now an exciting time for someone to become involved with High Jump as a donor, volunteer, or advocate?

“If you believe that every talented student deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, there’s a place for you at High Jump. Whether you give your time, your expertise or your financial support, you’ll help ensure students have access to opportunities that can shape their lives.”
